December News 2010
Christmas Tree Lights
In the cold and the snow at 5:30PM on Thursday the 9th of December a large crowd gathered at The Memorial at Buckingham Street, Dublin 1. The occasion was the annual switching on of the Christmas Tree lights, a ceremony organised by ICON to commemorate all those who have died from drug related causes. The stars on the tree represent the spirits of those departed.
The speech on the night was delivered by Mel MacGiobúin of the North Inner City Drugs Task Force, who reminded local people of the time in the 1990's when they came together to demand for action and help for their neglected neighbourhoods. He highlighted the achievements of individuals and groups, and acknowledged that there are now many services where people can turn to for support but also that there are still many challenges for the future. Music at the ceremony was by the wonderful musicians from NYP2 who had the crowd joining in with their carols, Michelle welcomed everyone and led the countdown, and many thanks to ICON who provided very welcome hot drinks and mince pies.

NICDTF Video Feature
In September this year, Dublin’s North Inner City Local Drug Task Force (NICDTF) held a Conference & Projects' Exhibition, in Liberty Hall, Dublin.
The event, entitled ‘Together making a Difference’, was a showcase of the work of projects funded through the NICDTF. On the day, over 20 projects exhibited information about their work and achievements. In addition, small project groups and school classes were facilitated to view exhibits throughout the day.
Drugs.ie attended the event and spoke to some of those involved with the projects and services and made a video feature. In this video, representatives from many of the projects and services provide a brief overview of the nature and scope of their individual services. The feature is introduced by Mel MacGiobúin, NICDTF coordinator who gives an overview of the activities of the Task Force. Click here to view the video on Drugs.ie website.
